When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi (2016). I finished this book a few days ago, but I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had the chance to write a few words about this remarkable work. The book explores life and death, and how to find joy in living even when you know your time is limited.
Dr. Kalanithi was leading a life filled with personal and professional success when he discovered he had advanced cancer. He fought bravely, but in the end, the illness claimed his life.
I don’t clearly remember how the title is explained, but it refers to the transformation that occurs after death; the same air that keeps us alive through breathing becomes simply air when life is gone.
I won’t lie, this is a sad book, but it’s beautifully written, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Dr. Kalanithi was a scholar, deeply educated and skilled in English literature. It’s truly one of the best books I’ve read this year.
